CHRISTENSEN) was born July 27, 1864 in Hjelmsted, Serridslev,Borglum Herred, Hjorring
Amt, Denmark, and died March 18, 1947 in Cedargreen, Snohomish Co., Washington. He
married JOHANNA JENSEN 1898 in Deloraine, Winchester, Manitoba, Canada, daughter of
ANDERS JENSEN and MARIE JENSDATTER. She was born May 31, 1878 in Gunderup,
Vrejlev, Hjorring, Denmark, and died January 18, 1967 in Stanwood, Snohomish Co.,
Washington.

"John Christensen (1864-1947) and wife Johanna Jensen started farming in the Goodlands area
in 1890 with Mr. Christensen's brother Jens. They later move to another farm - 32-1-24, his
homestead and pre-emption and from there to SW of 29-1-24 in 1903. They built a lovely
home in the latter location and farmed there until 1907 when they sold out and moved to
Stanwood, Wash. Four children, Anna, Axel, Esther, and Myrtle were born while they lived at
Goodlands, and another three boys and three girls were born in Wash.
Mr. Christensen acquired a dairy farm in Wash. with a large tract of land on it in cedar timber
fit for lumber.
Three of his sons own a chain of Thrift Stores in Stanwood area while another son is an
electrician."

(Just after his 85th birthday, and getting in his wood.)
The farm in Canada was just six miles above the border. West Hope, N.D. was just six miles below the
border, so the family traveled back and forth frequently.
The family moved to Eastern Washington for about a year in 1916 or 17. They were back over here by the
end of the war. Three families, the Christensens, Larsens and Norgards followed over some other neighbors
to "the land of opportunity, get over here quick..." The family moved to a farm 8 or 9 miles north of the lake
(Moses Lake) near a railroad stopover.
I (Nels) got in a lot of trouble over there, of course we were warned about rattle snakes, so I got a real eating
out when Barney and I brought home a dead one.
When it got cold we went out and found sage brush. That was really good burning firewood, especially if
you dug up the roots. It was hard and greasy and made a good fire.
Dad came home and said he had brought home some telephone poles. We were wondering how he had
transported a load of telephone poles. The phone poles were a couple of 2x4s that he nailed to the fence and
ran a single strand phone line to. Things were pretty rustic out there.
The trip over and back was made by train. Dad rode over with the stock. All we brought back was a couple
of cows and two horses, real broncos, named Ed and Burke.
I was coming 8 when I started school back on this side of the mountains.
We had two other horses, a white one Tootsie, and a dark one Jean.

Deloraine was kind of a county seat (Municipality of Winchester) and was 6 or 7 miles NE of Goodlands
The Simonsons were there - they had a quarter section
After my Junior year, 1927 I believe, I spent the summer with Uncle Tony (Christensen). He had a big place
way out on its own. In about 1930 I went back and stayed over the winter. I saw the beginning of the dust
bowl.
Uncle Tony raised lots of pigs - they would should ship 30 or 40 at a time.
A slaughtered hog would last four or five days feeding five men.
Uncle Tony had about 30 head of horses - we would run 22 horses in four teams for plowing and disking,
teams of sixes or fives depending on what you were pulling.
John had 3/4 of a section in Canada that he owned until the early 30s.
The farm at Cedarhome was about 100 acres
While we were in Moses Lake I was sick in bed for about 8 weeks.
In the summer it was so hot on our barefeet we kept running or dug holes to get to cooler soil.
We had the best well in the country and sheepherders would come from all over. We had several large horse
herds that came through with some beautiful horses, 'course there were some I wouldn't want in my back yard.
And of course there were always cattle.
Mac (Ronald MacDonald) was quite a skater, we had a pond out at the farm and Mav was pretty catty on the
ice. The rest of us were more on our butts than anything else. He smoked a corn cob pipe. He was never
very far away from it. He was a real nice guy who could have a good time. Seemed like he was seven feet
tall.
Souris N.D. is 20 or 30 miles west of West Hope and a county seat of some sort. The family had occasion to
go there periodically and did business there time to time
